Hello! I live in California & I homeschool using a Waldorf curriculum. www.pepperandpine.com

Hana
I’m super excited to share my Silk Road Lesson p I’m super excited to share my Silk Road Lesson plans!! These coordinate with the lessons plans for Ibn Battuta, West Africa, China and Islamic empire unit studies.
.
We have been covering a vast area and nearly 2000 years of history and it’s taking far longer than I anticipated.
.
I divided our units into regions and time periods and we are making our way through them.
.
Once I sorted through the books and lesson activities, I put together our lessons plans. They are divided into three levels: elementary, middle school, and high school. Each lesson plan level contains unique books, resources and lessons, but also there is overlap.
.
There were books and projects I thought would work for multiple levels, and so you’ll see some similarities between the levels.
.
The lesson plans contain details about the books, links to the books and links to project and recipe tutorials.
.
In our homeschool, we did it all and my children are currently 10 and 14 years old. I truly believe that when you use living books that are read aloud, you can educated multiple grades and abilities at the same time.
.
What differs is the work each student will produce. And when you use main lesson books, is easy for a student to do the lesson activity or narration according to their development and skill set.
.
The lesson plans cover 4 intense weeks because it’s initially designed as a main lesson block. So the majority of our time is spent on these lessons.
.
However, if you are doing these lessons with other work, I would suggest making each week of lessons last a two, three or four weeks.
.
You can find more details and pics on the product page at the Pepper and Pine. Link in bio.
.
And it’s on sale now!!

Let’s talk about our life’s journey and our i Let’s talk about our life’s journey and our individual purpose. About a year ago I had a bit of a crisis. I doubted my place here, my purpose and even my passion. I disappeared from my public platforms and grew sadder as the days turned to weeks and finally months. I had to rethink a lot of things.
.
During this time, my friend Megan @coachmeganwyatt was in the midst of putting together her One Meaningful Life program.
.
Shortly after she launched her program, I signed up. She didn’t know I had until I told her. But here I was trying to make sense of my life.
.
I started the course...Watching the videos as I walked on the treadmill.
.
I was looking for a lot of things. Was I on the right track for me? Was what I was working on my true passion? Would it bring me joy and serve others?
.
I feel at a crossroads in my life and question whether sharing my homeschool journey is the right thing for me. I love it for sure, but is it my personal purpose. At the moment yes, I think...
.
I hope that by working through the program I will better understand where I want to put my energies.
.
Truthfully I’m not done with the program, but now that the program has been relaunched with additional content and live sessions, I’m reinvigorated to dive back into it and make this my One Meaningful Life.

I know people were looking at me. After all I’m I know people were looking at me. After all I’m snowboarding in a dress. Not even a sporty dress...just a long dress with a flowy scarf that I wear often.
.
I know a look silly snowboarding in a dress, and I’m okay with that. I know I don’t look sporty or athletic, and I’m comfortable with that.
.
I think there are many ways to do things, and being different comes with risks and benefits.
.
I noticed in the pictures my sister took of me that people were taking pictures of me. I’m sure I was an unusual sight coming down the hill with my dress and scarf flowing in the wind, but no one said anything that would make me feel self conscious of not dressing for the occasion.
.
In fact just the opposite happened. On my last run, two gorgeous, bold, confident black women said to me, “the fact that you’re snowboarding in a dress is dope...It’s powerful.”
.
Indeed it is powerful.
.
And I deeply appreciated their comment.
.
We can be bold together.
.
It takes courage to compliment someone and it takes courage to be different.

And it’s done! We completed our Alaska unit, and And it’s done! We completed our Alaska unit, and if you want to see the books we read, you can hear me talk and talk and talk about them and how we homeschool in a super long review video.
.
I also put together lesson plans for this unit that you can find on the blog post and in my shop.
.
I made five separate lesson plans divided by grade level and sorted all our books and activities into those levels.
.
I chose simple picture books and projects for Pre-K & Kindergarten, storybooks and art projects for grades 1 & 2, chapter books and handwork for grades 3 & 4 and longer content and novels with handwork for grades 5 & 6, and for middle school and high school I’ve increased the challenge of handwork and included classics and longer novels with history and biographies.
.
Because we did all the books and projects (my children are 10 & 14), I’ve included all the lesson plans together so you can mix and match books and projects.
.
The lesson plans include links to the books and links to video tutorials for the projects. I also share a little bit about each book and how we liked it or what it was about. I hope this helps you choose the right books for you and your children.
.
To see the insides of each book and my lengthy review, you can check out the video on YouTube.
.
We loved this quick unit and it was a good educational palate cleanse before diving back into our history units.
.
Enjoy!!

I learned a new art form from today’s Waldorf ha I learned a new art form from today’s Waldorf handwork conference @waldorf_handwork_educators
.
The instructor, Yoriko, shared the book she adapted this technique from. It’s originally used with pastels. Her book was in Japanese, so when I learn name of the English version, I’ll share.
.
The basic principle is to use color pencil shavings to apply the color to your paper using your fingertips.
.
I loved this project so much! You really get to feel the art. You don’t need to be precise, so it’s great for those of us who don’t feel artistic.
.
If you feel like you want to try more drawing, you can add the details to the foreground after the color is applied to the edges with the sharpened color pencils.
.
To get that nice clean edge, use masking tape, but be careful when you remove the tape so you don’t damage your artwork.

Handwork can be a group project too. This is the s Handwork can be a group project too. This is the scarf my 14-year-old son and I knit together.
.
I cast on and knit two rows. Then he knit row after row. While I read aloud for our lessons he would knit until his hands tired (about 15 minutes or less) or his motivation tired.
.
On occasion I would knit and he would read aloud. Together we (mostly he) knit 44 inches. I was aiming for 60 inches but at 4 inches wide (casted on 15 stitches), we ran out of yarn.
.
To add length and beauty, I used a similar color yarn to add a full fringe. I did that part too and surprised my son with the finished scarf. I love the way it turned out. It took about 8 hours to complete.
.
In today’s YouTube tutorial, I share how to knit this scarf. It’s perfect for beginners but not ideal for young knitters in my opinion.
.
If you have a young knitter, I recommend Elizabeth’s @elizabethsewardhandwork book Jane and Jeremy Learn to Knit. It’s packed with easy beginner projects for children that are really creative like the knitted bunny which you can also find on my YouTube channel.
.
We bought the size 10 knitting needles from @achildsdreamcrafts and the bulky Lamb’s pride yarn @brownsheepco in Smokey Sage and Blue Willow are from Webs @websyarn

We made snowflake trivia cards with watercolors on We made snowflake trivia cards with watercolors on one side and questions on the back, and they are available as a digital printout on my website.
.
I love the way these turned out but it was surprisingly more time consuming than I expected. So I’ve made these available in case you want to add these to your homeschool, but you don’t want to do the project.
.
I used the book The Story of Snow as inspiration for this project. And used it as the content for our questions.
.
I posted a tutorial on YouTube if you want to do something similar. I’ve made them with the children for many of our unit studies in the past and you can see our collection in my story today.
.
On the blog post you can also find the examples and tutorials for these trivia cards that we’ve done for our bird, bee, ocean and astronomy units.
.
This time, I not only wrote the questions on the back of our original cards, I also typed them up and printed them on the back of the cards and laminated them.
.
Swipe to pic 4 to see them printed and laminated.
.
We love our Professor Noggins trivia card game and decided to make our own. This serves so many purposes but one of the reasons why I’m doing these more these days is so I can customize our cards to suit our lessons and unit studies as there may not be Professor Noggins with these topic areas.
.
We include these cards as part of our opening activities. Mostly we use them with the unit we are currently studying but it’s also useful to use these card with units you’ve previously completed to keep that information fresh or to test yourself on how much you remember.
.
Another perk is adding more art into our lessons. These are not art lessons, these are artistic representations of a lesson. When we slow down and include art within our lessons, we create space for reflections on the material we learned and promote connection to the lesson.

My sister texted me today with a request to post a My sister texted me today with a request to post a picture of her after treatment and a caption to match... She’s always in good and humorous spirits 💕

Am I on a movie set back lot filming an apocalyptic movie? Or am I actually entering “The Twilight Zone”... Naaaaa!!! it’s only the room where I get my daily dose of Radiant energy boost!!!

Nope, not so lucky!!! Getting radiation to kill cancer, but radiation warning states that radiation can cause cancer!!! Whatever!!! I pray that Allah showers this world with His Mercy and restores balance where real cures are back... May all who suffer be closer to Allah.
We did a lesson together...my 9-year-old daughter We did a lesson together...my 9-year-old daughter and I. I recorded the lesson so you can see and hear how we do a lesson like this.
.
It’s quieter now that we have no babies or toddlers, and it’s a needed mental break for me.
.
After doing so much reading, and my children doing so much listening and writing, it’s restorative to do a lesson that’s artistic.
.
These aren’t art lessons, they are artistic representations of a lesson, and it’s a much needed opportunity to slow down and reflect on the lesson.
.
In this case, I hope this will be an anchor for our Alaska unit. A moment in which she can recall the book and the story...and hopefully the other lessons we did.
.
Reflective moments in our education are essential for deep learning.
.
Because we read so many books we can often feel like we are consuming, consuming, consuming with no output or reflection.
.
The books mean nothing if we haven’t processed the information and slept on it.
.
Then something golden happens. It enters a part of the brain the is reserved for long term memory. Then we can recall it and transform it and examine it. But not all at once. It takes time.
.
The live lesson is on the blog post for our Alaska unit on my website.
.
We used the books Raven and the Tide Lady as inspiration for this lesson.
.
