How To Make A Crayon Case

When at first you don’t succeed, don’t worry, it’s just an another opportunity to get it right the second time around. That’s what happened with this project. I didn’t just mess up once, but three times. The last mistake on this project just couldn’t be fixed, and I chose to do it again. Of course, the second time around was much faster and easier, though slightly tedious. It seems had a contingency plan for such a thing happening, as I bought twice the fabric needed to make the crayon case…you know…just in case.

Well, I’m happy to tell you that I’m very pleased with the final outcome, even though it’s white and I anticipate it getting dirty with crayons pretty quickly. I do love white; however, so I’m really loving the way the crayon case looks, especially with the bright rainbow colored felt pockets.

Materials:

  1. 1/3 yard of corduroy fabric (60 inches wide)
  2. multi colored wool felt (I happen to have enough colors for the complete set of Stockmar block and stick crayons)
  3. 2 yards of yarn (to make the twizzle)
  4. optional: wood pieces for decoration
  5. sewing machine, thread, iron, straight pins, and scissors
  6. optional: dye to color your fabric

Directions:

  1. cut pockets from felt: 1.25″x2.25″ for sticks and 1.75″x2.25″ for blocks
  2. cut corduroy fabric 9.5″x25″
  3. fold over the fabric .25″ all around and iron the fold
  4. fold in half long ways and sew all four side, keeping a small section un-sewn on the side where the two pieces of fabric come together (this is where we’ll insert our yarn twizzle.
  5. line up the pockets (stick on one side and block on the other) and pin in place
  6. sew the pockets to the corduroy
  7. make a twizzle from the yarn (it’s best to watch this)
  8. sew the twizzle into the opening
  9. decorate with wood pieces
  10. fill the pockets with crayons and enjoy!

  1. Love it ! We just got our supplies from A Child’s Dream. I hope I can make the case for the crayons 🙂

  2. I think you block crayon pocket measurement has a typo. It should be 1.75×1.25, not 2.25. The crayons are only 1.5 inches at the longest point, so they wouldn’t stick out if it was 2.25. Thanks for this tutorial though, it’s great otherwise!

  3. I am itching to make one (or two or three) of these…..

That red color feels like old world amazing brown/red…
The white turned out amazing too and how fun is it to have it contrast with the rainbow colors inside……
    They are both really pretty!

The original green also has a lot of appeal…. What color should I choose !
I always thought the yarn pockets looked easier to use than the felt ones (for elasticity) …. do you think the felt pockets are as good ? Any downside to the crocheted ones ?
